New trio arrangement of
the First Suite from Razumov
performed in New York & Pittsburgh

A new trio arrangement of the First Suite from Razumov for clarinet, cello and piano, was premiered on Sunday, September 28, 2008, at the Jan Hus Church in Manhattan, New York City, on the Composer's Voice concert series. The premiere featured Heather Thon, clarinet, Vicky Chow, piano, and Caleigh Drane, cello. The program, curated by composer Douglas DaSilva also included works by DaSilva, Welton Barker and Aaron Jay Kernis.

Also on the same program was the New York premiere of On the Trunks of Strong Trees, performed by Angela Scherrah, soprano, Theresa Thompson, flute, Alexandra Frederick, piano, and Caleigh Drane, cello.

The trio arrangement of the First Suite from Razumov was performed by the Morningside Trio in Pittsburgh on November 9, 2008, during the preconcert talk before the premiere of the new Second Suite from Razumov for wind quintet (see box to right).

Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh premiere

The Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh presented the world premiere of the new Second Suite from Razumov on November 9, 2008, as part of the Sanctuary Concert Series at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. The concert also featured a preconcert talk by composer Greg Bartholomew funded in part through Meet The Composer's MetLife Creative Connections program. The program was repeated on November 16, 2008, at the Bower Hill Community Church in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

The Second Suite from Razumov was commissioned by a consortium of twenty wind quintet ensembles from around the world. The Avenue Winds will give the California premiere on July 18, 2009, at the San Francisco Chamber Wind Festival.

The Seattle Pacific University Brass Choir, under the direction of Brian Chin, presented the world premiere of the Lucky Seven Fanfare for seven piece brass on April 29, 2008.

Voyageur Suite

Raven Brass performed the Voyageur Suite for brass quintet on April 18, 2008, in Huntsville, Texas, at the Society of Composers Region VI Conference at Sam Houston State University.

The Voyageur Suite received its Seattle premiere at the Pleasure for the Ear concert presented on February 8, 2008. That concert also featured the world premiere of Beneath the Apple Tree as well as the Seattle premiere the String Trio for George Crumb. Other composers featured on the program include Gloria Swisher, Dale Dykins, Georgia Lockwood, Bernard Super, Nancy Kern, Lauren Geertsen and Fabio Ciofini.

Langroise Trio record
String Trio for George Crumb

The Langroise Trio, ensemble in residence at Albertson College of Idaho, performed Bartholomew's String Trio for George Crumb on March 8 and 10, 2007, in Boise and Caldwell, Idaho.

They recorded the work for their exciting new CD, Volante, released in April 2008.

(A Girl Born in Afghanistan)

European Premiere

The 4 mei project, under the direction of Pieter Kole, presented the European premiere of The 21st Century (A Girl Born in Afghanistan) in five performances in the Netherlands and Germany on April 19, 20 & 27, and May 3 & 4, 2008, in a concert that also featured Howard Hanson's "Song of Human Rights" and John Tavener's "Butterfly Dreams."

Washington, DC, Premiere

The Georgetown University Concert Choir, under the direction of C. Paul Heins, presented the Washington, DC, premiere of The 21st Century (A Girl Born in Afghanistan) at the Dahlgren Chapel of the Sacred Heart at 8 p.m. on November 19, 2008. The concert program also included Bernstein's Missa Brevis, Pablo Casals' O Vos Omnes, Philip Glass' Three Songs, and Caldwell & Ivory's "Hope for Resolution."

Maryland & Delaware Premieres

The Bach to the Future ensemble, conducted by Kevin Thomas, performed the Maryland and Delaware premieres of The 21st Century (A Girl Born in Afghanistan) as part of a concert entitled "Songs of Struggle and Hope" on April 27, 2008, at the Smyrna Opera House, Smyrna, Delaware, and May 4, 2008, at the Avalone Historic Theater, Easton, Maryland. Donald McCullough's Holocaust Cantata was also featured on the program.

Three Gnostic Poems
and
A Country Boy in Winter

Three Gnostic Poems, three new a cappella settings of poems by Fletcher LaVallee Bartholomew (1918-2006), "An Open World," "When I Land," and "And the Wind," were premiered by the chamber ensemble Coriolis, under the direction of Gregg Skalinder, in two performances in Grayslake and Evanston, Illinois, on May 11 and 17, 2008. The Coriolis performances also featured A Country Boy in Winter for men's chorus.

30 Performances of
The Tree

The Portland Vocal Consort, under the direction of Ryan Heller, presented the Oregon premiere of The Tree in a concert entitled "Time Flies" in Portland, Oregon, on October 24, 2008, and in Longview, Washington, on October 25, 2008.

The performances by the Portland Vocal Consort mark the 29th and 30th performances of this work. Since its 2004 premiere by the American University Chamber Singers, The Tree has also been performed in Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, California, Washington State and Ontario.
